The combination of two storm systems led to some messy weather across
much of the eastern half of the nation Saturday night into Sunday.
Across the Southeast, heavy rain and a few thunderstorms spread north
and eastward across the Gulf Coast states into the Florida Panhandle
and through the Carolinas. Some heavy rain made it into upstate South
Carolina, northeastern Georgia and western North Carolina, areas that
remain in an exceptional drought. While much more rain is needed on a
regular basis in these areas, amounts of 0.50 of an inch to an inch
were beneficial. Rain continued to spread northward through the
mid-Atlantic and parts of the Ohio Valley through early this morning.
Colder air in place ahead of the rain allowed for some late-night or
morning snow across eastern Pennsylvania, the Tri-State area, and New
York state. Farther south and west, a wintry mix developed across
parts of West Virginia and central Pennsylvania. In the Midwest, the
system that dumped several inches of snow across parts of Iowa,
northeastern Missouri and western Illinois overnight spread snow
farther eastward into the Chicago area this morning. Snow also spread
through parts of central and northern Indiana as well as southern
parts of Michigan and Wisconsin early today. Florida had its fare
share of messy weather today with strong storms rumbling through.
There was one unconfirmed report of a tornado near Celebration early
in the afternoon. In Colorado, snow developed east of the Front Range
overnight, while gusty winds whipped across the High Plains. The
weather across much of the rest of the country was quiet.
SPECIAL WEATHER
No November Snow for Buffalo in 2001
As the month of November draws to a close today, a total of about 6.3
inches of snow has fallen in Buffalo, N.Y., since the first of the
month. There have been times throughout history that much more snow
than that has fallen in Buffalo in the month of November, such as in
2000 when an impressive 45.6 inches of snow set a new record. There
has only been one time in recorded history when no snow fell in the
city throughout the entire month, and that was in 2001. Not even a
trace was reported in Buffalo that November, making it the first such
event since records have been kept since 1871.
