WPIAL Class AAA: Moon puts end to its 18-game losing streak

Mark Piccolo rushed for a career high 224 yards on 26 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns, as Moon ended an 18-game losing streak with a 21-14 upset of Mars last night.

Mars built a 14-6 halftime lead with an 8-yard touchdown run by Ben Bair and a 58-yard scoring pass from Eric Guzak to Aaron Lozzi.

Piccolo scored twice in the second half on runs of 1 and 7 yards, with the latter coming with less than 30 seconds left in the game. The Tigers also scored in the first quarter on a 9-yard pass from Caleb Jakiel to Chad Bertrand. Jakiel completed 9 of 13 passes for 139 yards.

Greensburg Salem 38, Hempfield 35

Josh Falatovich threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, as the Class AAA Golden Lions posted a narrow win against the Class AAAA Spartans. Falatovich connected with Michael Nowicki, Waylon Fink and Dan Nacey.

Knoch 56, Brashear 7

Andrew Rumburg-Goodlin rushed for 137 yards on seven carries and scored on runs of 39, 1, 25, and 20 yards, as the Knights won easily on the road against the Bulls.

Highlands 34, Freeport 24

Gary Negley rushed for 269 yards on 32 carries and scored four touchdowns to lead the Golden Rams to a road victory. Negley scored on runs of 49, 3, 2, and 7 yards. Brendan Lynch completed 7 of 7 passes for 177 yards and one touchdown for the Yellowjackets.

West Allegheny 41, South Park 0

Mike Caputo suffered an ankle injury after scoring twice for the Indians in a shutout of the Eagles. Dylan Bongiorni ran for one score and threw for another for the Indians.

New Castle 25, Butler 0

Justin Fleo rushed for 133 yards on 25 carries and scored on runs of 2 and 1 yards, as the Red Hurricanes posted a home shutout against the Golden Tornadoes. John Matarazzo threw for 211 yards and scored on a 3-yard run for New Castle.

Uniontown 14, Connellsville 0

Fred Johnson ran 13 yards for one score and caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Lucas Mosco to lead the Red Raiders to a shutout of the visiting Falcons.

Central Valley 35, Allderdice 0

Chad Phillis caught two touchdown passes from different quarterbacks, as the Warriors posted the first win in school history. Phillis caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Curtis Lewis, and a 35-scoring pass from Matt Bradford.

McGuffey 20, Laurel Highlands 16

Derrick Whipkey ran 42 yards for a touchdown with 2:34 left to provide the winning touchdown for the Highlanders. Whipkey rushed for 136 yards on 13 carries and also scored on runs of 3 and 14 yards. Jake Riddell completed 14 of 27 passes for 195 yards for the Mustangs.

Hollidaysburg 41, Altoona 20

Chad Barton completed 12 of 21 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Golden Tigers to a convincing win against the Mountain Lions. Barton connected with T.J. Keefer on scoring passes of 69, 5, and 81 yards.

Trinity 40, Canon-McMillan 22

Brad Martin connected with Mike Cleveland on touchdown passes of 69 and 55 yards to lead the Hillers to a road victory against the Big Macs.

Ringgold 35, Elizabeth Forward 19

Derrick Fiore rushed for 242 yards and scored on runs of 55, 87, and 20 yards to lead the Rams to a win against the visiting Warriors. Brandon Hill led Elizabeth Forward with 117 yards and scored on runs of 34, 6, and 34 yards.

Hopewell 14, Belle Vernon 7

Rushel Shell returned a kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown and ran 79 yards for another score, as Hopewell posted a narrow win on the road. Shell rushed for 168 yards.
