Q: Ron: What do you make of the Paul Jones redshirt? I thought he looked pretty good in the Blue-White game and might have a chance to start this season. This really comes as a surprise.

Hiran Ratnayake, Wilmington, Del.

MUSSELMAN: When I first heard about a possible redshirt for Jones a few weeks ago, I, too, was surprised. But then I had heard Jones, a January enrollee, had gotten off to a tough start academically. And coach Joe Paterno confirmed Tuesday that academic issues knocked Jones out of the quarterback race. Paterno also said that Jones would redshirt, as I previously reported. Jones entered Penn State with lofty credentials -- Scout.com rated him the No. 2 prep quarterback in the country as a high school senior last year --- and he threw two touchdown passes in the Blue-White game. But Jones has quickly been passed by another true freshman quarterback, Robert Bolden, on the depth chart during preseason practice.
