Paterno doesn't name starter for Saturday
Tuesday, August 31, 2010

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State coach Joe Paterno didn't name a starting quarterback today, but he hopes to do so soon.

Sophomore Kevin Newsome, redshirt sophomore Matt McGloin and true freshman Robert Bolden are vying for the right to start Saturday's home opener against Youngstown State.

"We'll probably make up our mind in the next day or two as to who will start," Paterno said at his weekly news conference. "But we'll probably play a couple kids."

Paterno said true freshman quarterback Paul Jones, a January enrollee from Sto-Rox High School, was knocked out of the quarterback race due to poor grades and will redshirt.

"Jones had a bad start academically," Paterno said.

Penn State also named its two captains, as voted on by the team -- defensive tackle Ollie Ogbu and wide receiver Brett Brackett.

Also, Paterno said wide receiver Chaz Powell has moved back to offense due to injuries after working much of preseason camp at cornerback. Powell was a starting receiver last season.
