Chesson Hadley didn't call to make a tee time for his practice round the day before the Mylan Classic Qualifier at Green Oaks Country Club, thinking he could jump on the course when he got there.
Finding the course booked, he found another way in.
"I found a member and said, 'Look, I'd love to play with you today if you'd have me,'" he said. "He got me on, and he told me where to hit and where not to."
Maybe that's the way to go, because Hadley, a 23-year-old from Raleigh, N.C., shot a 4-under 66 Monday to earn one of four qualifying spots for the Nationwide Tour's Mylan Classic, which begins Thursday at Southpointe Golf Club.
Dustin Groves of Keswick, Va., Manuel Villegas of Jupiter, Fla., and Steve Cuzzort of Birmingham, Mich., earned the other qualifying positions. Cuzzort, playing in the final group of the day, saved par on 18 to force a four-way playoff for the other three spots with Villegas, Groves and Brett Melton of Washington, Ind.
"I can't wait," Cuzzort said of playing in the Mylan. "It's my first Nationwide event, so I'm really excited."
Cuzzort birdied the first playoff hole, No. 1, despite hitting the ball into the adjacent seventh fairway off the tee.
"I got lucky where I was on the green because I had kind of the same putt earlier on the first hole and I made it for birdie," he said.
The other three parred the hole. On the par-3 17th, the second playoff hole, Villegas parred and Groves bogeyed after missing the green to the left. But Melton, who also shot a 67 to make the playoff, struggled. He missed the green to the right and then sent his chip shot over the green. He chipped back on, but missed two putts before picking up his ball.
Hadley has enjoyed a busy summer. He graduated from Georgia Tech in May then got married in July. He sank several long putts Monday, including one for birdie on the sixth hole that he called a snake.
"That was probably the fastest putt I had all day," he said. "It broke about 2 feet in the last 4 feet."
Villegas' putter, on the other hand, gave him trouble. He put the ball close to the pin on the first six holes, but couldn't birdie any of them.
"You can always make more," he said.
He birdied holes seven, nine, 11, 14, 15 and 17, however, to finish strong.
Groves, the only one of the five to play in the morning, birdied four of the first eight holes, but four-putted the ninth. He birdied 14 and 15 to make it back to 3 under.
While waiting for the afternoon group to finish, he and his friend Chris McCartin, who also was playing in the tournament, ate lunch, watched football and putted, anticipating a playoff.
"I sort of took that mindset that I was going to be in a playoff, not to go drink beer and relax," he said.
Jim McGovern, Brad Adamonis and Hugo Leon also qualified for the tournament. They were chosen from the tournament's list of alternates.
