On offense, three quarterbacks are vying to replace Daryll Clark, last year's co-MVP in the Big Ten. Neither Kevin Newsome, picvtured at left, Matt McGloin nor Robert Bolden has started a collegiate game. Evan Royster needs 481 yards to pass Curt Warner and become the school's all-time leading rusher, but he will have to do it behind a retooled offensive line.

On defense, all three starting linebackers were drafted by NFL teams, as were both starting tight ends. And All-American defensive tackle Jared Odrick was a first-round pick of the Miami Dolphins. Gary Gilliam, a defensive end last season, is listed as the starting tight end. Oft-injured Devon Still hopes to replace Odrick and promising linebacker Michael Mauti is working his way back from an ACL injury. The Lions have one of the best secondaries in the Big Ten and a rising star in defensive end Jack Crawford. But that might not be enough to prevent an 8-4 season.
