Q: Ron, With such inexperience at the quarterback position this year and the loss of all the linebackers from last year, is the front seven and the secondary strong enough when playing the Big Ten Elite teams and Alabama to keep the team close in these big games.
Joe Daglio, New Castle
MUSSELMAN: Penn State's secondary certainly has a wealth of experience with three starters returning. But Stephon Morris, last year's nickel back, has been limited by a sprained neck in preseason practice. Defensive end Jack Crawford is a star in the making and I think the Lions should be pretty solid on defense. Whether they can hang with the big boys remains to be seen. We will know the answer to that question Sept. 11 after the Alabama game. Keep in mind, defensive coordinator Tom Bradley's unit lost its top three linebackers and tacklers from a year ago -- Josh Hull, NaVorro Bowman and Sean Lee --- as well as defensive tackle Jared Odrick, a first-round draft pick of the Miami Dolphins.
