Afleet Express outlasted Fly Down in a riveting run down the stretch and won the $1 million Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course in a photo finish Saturday.

Afleet Express, with Javier Castellano aboard, had taken the lead from Miner's Reserve along the rail with about an eighth of a mile to go before Fly Down unleashed a furious rally that came up a nose short.

A diverse field of 11 3-year-olds was entered in the 11/4 -mile Travers, ranging from Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver to the runners-up in all three Triple Crown races.

The winning time was 2:03.28. Afleet Express returned $16, $7.80 and $4.90. Fly Down, trained by Nick Zito, paid $6.90 and $5.20 and First Dude paid $4.60 to show. Afleet Express earned $600,000 and boosted his career winnings to $835,140..

Diana Taurasi scored 23 points and Tangela Smith added 16 for Phoenix in a 92-73 victory at San Antonio, sweeping the Silver Stars in the first round of the WNBA Western Conference playoffs. Phoenix has eliminated San Antonio from the playoffs three times in the past four years.

• Lauren Jackson had 24 points and nine rebounds as the Seattle Storm defeated host Los Angeles, 81-66, to complete a sweep of the WNBA Western Conference semifinals series. Swin Cash scored 16 points for Seattle.

U.S. Open top seed Caroline Wozniacki has won her third consecutive Pilot Pen title in New Haven, Conn., beating Russian Nadia Petrova, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. The win is the second this week for the 20-year-old Wozniacki, who won Monday in Montreal. In the men's final, Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky won his second tournament of the year, beating Denis Istomin, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Seton Hill kicked off the season in Western Pennsylvania with a 20-14 home victory against Bowie State at Offutt Field in Greensburg. Quarterback D.J. Lenehan completed 12 of 20 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns. The winning score was a 21-yard pass from Lenehan to Tyler McIntosh.
