Users of the Eliza Furnace Trail will have a year of detours during replacement of the bridge that carries the trail over Bates Street in South Oakland.
Work on the project, which also calls for widening the Bates Street approach to Second Avenue, will begin Monday. The detour will go into effect on Wednesday, according to the city Public Works Department.
The new bridge will have a greater height clearance, allowing trucks and buses to access Bates Street and the Parkway East from Second Avenue.
The Bates Street approach to Second Avenue will be widened to five lanes. The new bridge will be flanked by stone walls and plantings creating a landscaped portal for Oakland. Construction cost is about $3.8 million.
Trail users will be detoured at the Hot Metal Street pedestrian bridge and at Middle Access Drive to adjacent streets through the Pittsburgh Technology Center.
Traffic along Bates Street will be maintained except for intermittent night and weekend closures to accommodate demolition and beam erection.
