The Dribbler: Luck of the Irish?
Friday, March 19, 2010

Oh, the luck of the Irish.

No, The Dribbler is not technically Irish. He's one-third Scandinavian, three-fifths Dutch, one-quarter Antarctican and 100 percent bad at math.

But at this time of the year, everyone's Irish. And last week -- for the O'Dribbler at least -- it showed.

No rainbows were involved, but The Dribbler found gold with his first-round PIAA playoff picks. He successfully predicted the outcome of 27 of the 38 games involving WPIAL and City League teams (71.7 percent). That brings his season total to 159-78 (67.1 percent).

The Dribbler enjoyed last week's playoff action, mainly because WPIAL teams were so dominant -- every WPIAL champion advanced to the second round.

This next week is one of The Dribbler's least favorite times of the year because WPIAL teams are pitted against one another with their seasons on the line.

If there is one thing The Dribbler hates -- besides Mallo Cups -- it's WPIAL vs. WPIAL in the state playoffs.

Here are The Dribbler's views on this week's PIAA quarterfinal games:

Top boys' games

Chartiers Valley vs. York Suburban, 7 p.m. today, Hollidaysburg -- York Suburban is good enough to give Chartiers Valley a game, but with Matt Noszka and Wayne Capers back from injuries, Chartiers Valley won't lose. Winner: Chartiers Valley.

West Mifflin vs. Hampton, 7:30 p.m. today, North Allegheny -- The Dribbler has been waiting for a semifinal game between Hampton and Chartiers Valley, which would be a rematch of the WPIAL Class AAA final. He'll get his wish. Winner: Hampton.

North Allegheny vs. Gateway, 2:30 p.m. tomorrow, Chartiers Valley -- Is this game strange, or what? Neither team has ever played in a PIAA quarterfinal. Gateway blocked 19 shots the last time these two teams met. The Gators won't get that many this time, but they will get another win. Winner: Gateway..

Other boys' games

Today -- Lincoln Park over Neshannock; Sewickley Academy over Tussey Mountain.

Saturday -- North Catholic over South Fayette; Mercyhurst Prep over Rochester.

Top girls' games

Mt. Lebanon vs. Baldwin, 6 p.m. today, Chartiers Valley -- It's been a great season for Baldwin. Too bad Mt. Lebanon keeps getting in the way. This is the fourth meeting between the two and Mt. Lebanon won the first three. Baldwin's only chance is to have a great night shooting. That won't happen. Winner: Mt. Lebanon.

Chartiers Valley vs. Hopewell, 2:30 p.m. tomorrow, Ambridge -- Chartiers Valley plays a lot like the Colts' boys' team. In other words, speed up the tempo and shoot a decent amount of 3-pointers. But Hopewell is just a little better team, all around. Winner: Hopewell.

Other top girls' games

Today -- Villa Maria over Seton-LaSalle; Avonworth over South Fayette.

Saturday -- West York over Indiana.
