Young homers again in Pirates' 5-4 loss to Twins
Thursday, March 18, 2010

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Delwyn Young homered for the fourth time in five games in the Pirates' 5-4 loss to the Minnesota Twins this afternoon at Hammond Stadium.

Jason Jaramillo and Jeff Clement also homered.

The Pirates were trailing, 2-1, entering the sixth. Ronny Cedeno, in his first game back after his right hand was lacerated Sunday, doubled off Clay Condrey. Young homered to right and, after a second out, Clement homered to right-center, his first.

Young, a lock to make the bench, went 1 for 4 and is batting .357 with four home runs and 12 RBIs. He also has performed well at second base, though he made a throwing error in the first inning of this game.

Jaramillo's home run, his first, came to right field in the second, off Minnesota starter Carl Pavano.

The Pirates' starter, Ross Ohlendorf, allowed two runs and four hits in four innings, his spring ERA now at 5.14.

"I feel like I was able to be into the game more in terms of reading hitters' swings, picking my pitches," Ohlendorf said. "I felt really good about today. My changeup was a really good secondary pitch. My sinker and changeup were really good."

Brandon Moss' spring start is now at 0 for 22 after going 0 for 3 as the designated hitter. He reached once on an error but was caught stealing.

Javier Lopez pitched a scoreless sixth and now has made six scoreless appearances.

Brian Bass allowed a run in each of the eighth and ninth, the latter on Luke Hughes' RBI double that brought Minnesota the victory.

The Pirates, 4-10-1 in the Grapefruit League play, face the Boston Red Sox tomorrow in Bradenton.
