Wednesday, March 17, 2010

Ricky Cannon stopped 20 of 21 shots and Joshua Hetz assisted on all three goals as No. 1 seed Shaler beat Mt. Lebanon, 3-1, in a PIHL Class AAA Penguins Cup quarterfinal Tuesday night at Bladerunners in Harmarville.

Shane Shiring, Pat Schafer and Zac Lynch scored for the defending PIHL champion Titans (21-1-1).

Trevor Nelson scored and Travis Lisowski made 37 saves for the No. 12 Blue Devils (10-13-2).

"I thought it was a nice win," Shaler coach Curt Hetz said.

"We played exceptionally well."

The semifinals in all three classes will be played Monday and Tuesday at Mellon Arena.

Other Class AAA quarterfinal

• Seneca Valley 2, Bethel Park 1: Logan Pfeffer had two second-period goals and the No. 4 seed Raiders (17-5-1) held on for a win against the No. 7 Black Hawks (15-7-2) at Bladerunners in Warrendale.

Senior goalie Ryan Schutte improved to 10-3-1 in allowing one goal or less for the sixth time this season for the Raiders, who have a six-game unbeaten streak.

Tyler Shipley had the lone goal for Bethel Park.

Class AA quarterfinal

• Bishop Canevin 11, Chartiers Valley 4: Frank Vance had a hat trick and eight other Crusaders scored as Bishop Canevin (16-3-3) tied a season high for goals in a win against the Colts (9-11-2) at Mt. Lebanon Ice Arena.

"It was nice to see [the scoring] spread out a little," Bishop Canevin coach Kevin Zielmanski said.

"With all the games we struggled to score this year, to fill the net and get the guys on a bit of a roll as we go into the playoffs, it worked out rather well for us."
