Sewickley Academy star Tom Droney was unusually quiet offensively Tuesday night, scoring a season-low seven points.
But it was what Droney and his teammates did defensively that had not been seen in a PIAA boys' playoff game in the past six years.
The Panthers got defensive in a 41-19 win against District 9 runner-up Elk County Catholic in a PIAA second-round game at Clarion University.
The 19 points were the fewest scored by a boys' team in the PIAA playoffs since 2004.
The WPIAL champion Sewickley Academy (24-2), which owns the top defense in WPIAL Class A, limited Elk County Catholic (24-6) to 21 percent shooting (7 for 32). The Crusaders did not score in the second quarter and made just 3 of 14 field goals in the first half.
Tyler Palmer connected on five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 17 points for Sewickley Academy.
