Wednesday, March 17, 2010

A Stanton Heights woman was arrested Tuesday after she left her two young children in her sport utility vehicle at an East Liberty shopping center for at least a half-hour while she got her nails done, police said.

Lakayla Irish, 27, faces child endangerment charges. She was scheduled to be arraigned early this morning.

Police said that they were called to the Village of Eastside shopping center, at Penn Avenue and East Liberty Boulevard, at 4:21 p.m. There they found a 5-year-old girl sitting in the back seat with her 8-year-old brother, who was sleeping. Police were unable to unlock the car doors. About five minutes later, Ms. Irish returned to the car and she was arrested. She told police she was getting a manicure at a nearby salon.

The children were examined by paramedics but were uninjured. They were released to their grandmother, police said.
