Man convicted in 1975 killing loses appeal
Wednesday, March 17, 2010

A man ordered to spend the rest of his life in prison for a 1975 slaying lost his appeal to the state Superior Court on Tuesday.

Steven Slutzker, who was found guilty of first-degree murder in 2007, filed an appeal in his case challenging 10 different aspects of his trial before Allegheny County Judge Jeffrey A. Manning.

Among the issues he raised, Mr. Slutzker said he believed that the testimony from the victim's son - who was just a boy at the time of the shooting but claimed years later to have memory flashbacks - should have been barred.

In a 36-page opinion, the Superior Court agreed with prosecutors that Mr. Slutzker got a fair trial.

He was convicted of killing John Mudd Sr., 31, on Dec. 28, 1975. Mr. Mudd was shot to death in the basement of his Wilkinsburg home. Mr. Slutzker and his family lived across the street from the victim at the time.

The 2007 conviction was the second time Mr. Slutzker was found guilty of murder in the case. The first verdict, reached in 1992, was thrown out by a federal court judge.
