Mike Leach sat across from his accuser Saturday as Craig James gave sworn testimony in the former coach's lawsuit against Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas.
James, whose complaint of mistreatment of his son led to Leach's firing, declined to comment as he walked into the university's administration building before his deposition.
Leach gave more than five hours of testimony Friday. When asked if he would be questioning James, he said, "I'm not allowed to."
Adam James, son of the ESPN analyst, also testified under oath, but Leach was not in the room when the Adam James gave his deposition. The university fired Leach Dec. 30, two days after suspending him amid allegations he mistreated Adam James, who had a concussion. Adam James contends his coach twice ordered him to stand for hours while confined in a dark place during practice. Leach has denied mistreating the receiver and suspects an $800,000 bonus he was to have received Dec. 31 was the reason he was fired.
Bailey Bram scored twice to lead No. 1 Mercyhurst (30-2-3) past visiting No. 8 Boston University (17-9-12), 4-1, and to the NCAA Division I Women's Frozen Four. LoLo Jones recovered from near-elimination in the semifinals to defend her title in the 60-meter hurdles, setting the record at the world indoor championships in Doha, Qatar. Jones set the championships record in 7.72 seconds, 0.03 seconds better than Perdita Felicien of Canada in 2004.
Oregon's Ashton Eaton broke Dan O'Brien's 17-year-old world record in the indoor heptathlon in Fayetteville, Ark. Eaton set a mark of 6,499 points at the NCAA indoor track and field championships, passing O'Brien's record of 6,476.
Nafee Harris of IUP won his second national championship in the long jump at the NCAA Division II indoor meet in Albuquerque, N.M. He finished first with a school-record jump of 25 feet, 71/4 inches.
The race is on between Lance Mackey and Jeff King. Two years ago, King, a four-time champion, appeared on his way to a fifth win in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race with a faster team when he was snookered by Mackey, who went on to win. Saturday, Mackey, the defending champion with three consecutive wins, again snatched the lead, according to global satellite positioning information. King had been leading the race, but Mackey grabbed the lead by being the first musher to leave the Kaltag checkpoint.
Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro upset top-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif. Two-time champion Kim Clijsters of Belgium advanced with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic. Third-seeded Victoria Azarenka, No. 8 Samantha Stosur, No. 9 Flavia Pennetta and No. 13 Yanina Wickmayer also won in straight sets.
In the men's draw, fifth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia beat Ernests Gulbis of Latvia, 6-4, 6-4. No. 10 Fernando Verdasco also advanced, but No. 16 Gilles Simon of France was beaten, 7-5, 6-4, by qualifier Brian Dabul of Argentina.
