Big East Women's Notebook: UConn's win streak remarkable
Monday, March 08, 2010

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Connecticut defeated Syracuse, 77-41, Sunday in a Big East women's basketball quarterfinal and in doing so, tied the 2001-03 Huskies NCAA record for consecutive victories at 70.

Tonight, the top-ranked Huskies (31-0) will be play No. 6 Notre Dame for a chance to establish a new record.

And while the winning streak is impressive, here are some other things to consider that make it remarkable.

• Connecticut has won all 70 games by 10 or more points.

• It is 12-0 against teams ranked in the Top 10 during the streak and won those games by an average of 27.2 points.

• It is 22-0 against ranked teams and has won those games by an average of 25.6 points.

"Any record, or history we accomplish, it doesn't really mean much if we don't accomplish our next goal, which is to beat Notre Dame," Connecticut junior Maya Moore said when asked about the streak. "It is something we will think about after the season but if we don't win the [Big East and NCAA] championships, it won't mean much."

The victory streak is only one of a number of unbelievable streaks the Huskies continued with the victory. Consider:

Connecticut has won 135 consecutive games against unranked opponents. The Huskies have not lost to an unranked team since 2004 (Arizona State).

Syracuse shot just 21.2 percent (14 for 66) from the floor. That marks 221 consecutive games the Huskies have held an opponents to less than 50 percent shooting. The last time a team shot better than 50 percent against them was 2004 (Boston College).

When The Associated Press poll is released today it will mark a record 42 consecutive weeks the Huskies have been No. 1. Connecticut has also won 25 games or more for 17 consecutive seasons and in 15 of those seasons they won 30 or more.

Perhaps the most impressive streak of all is that the Huskies have not lost two games in a row since the 1992-93 season, a span of 609 games.

One other item of note. Moore scored 16 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and had 7 assists in becoming the first Connecticut junior to reach 2,000 career points.

And Moore's class (the juniors) is 106-2 since arriving at Connecticut.

WVU coach honored

West Virginia coach Mike Carey and Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma were named co-coaches of the year but unlike Auriemma, Carey's team, which was picked to finish ninth in the Big East but finished second, has far surpassed expectations.

"I think it is a nice thing for me but to be honest, this is a team award," Carey said. "We had a lot of young kids grow up in a hurry, they played real hard and they did everything we asked them to do. It is really amazing how hard these girls play and we didn't have any off-court issues, chemistry issues, nothing like that -- it has been a pleasure to work with this group."
