The Pittsburgh Marathon is just weeks away, so wimping out of your winter-weather run is not an option. These tips, though, will make braving the cold easier.
Sunglasses are a must during the winter; the glare off snow can be pretty intense in the sunlight, especially if you have light-colored eyes. And yes, even when it's freezing outside you need to protect your skin from harmful UVA rays with sunscreen.
Twenty to 30 percent of your body heat can be lost through your head. So pull on a hat, ear warmers or fleece headband. Got long hair? Several athletic companies make hats with ponytail openings.
Consider wearing a neck garter or ski mask to protect your face in extremely frigid weather. When it's moderately cold, rub on some petroleum jelly or moisturizer. Protect your lips from chapping with a thin coat of Vaseline or lip balm.
Runners are more likely to get injured in slippery weather. Kevin Smith of Elite Runners & Walkers in Robinson, recommends carrying your cell phone in a waist pack or pocket, or $20 in case you have to call a cab. Also, if you're running in the dark, make sure someone knows where you're going.
There is always wind resistance when you're running outdoors. Learn to work with it. Start with a headwind on your way out and end with a tailwind.
Remember to stay hydrated, even if you don't feel thirsty. In the cold, it's easy to forget you're sweating.
