WHAT: Mountaineering apparel

Most of us know Eddie Bauer as a specialty retailer that caters to the active lifestyle and customers who prefer comfort to fashion. But much like its competitor, LL Bean, the company got its start outfitting actual adventurers. In the 1950s it began making gear for mountain climbers, including the team that completed the first American ascent of Everest in 1963.

Between watching the Winter Olympics and digging out from the avalanche of the past two weeks, staying warm in frigid weather has taken on new meaning. Fortunately, technology has kept up with low temperatures, and so has Eddie Bauer. It recently launched First Ascent, a line of expedition-quality mountaineering apparel and gear designed by world-class climbers including Peter Whittaker, Ed Viesturs and Dave Hahn. Their standards for technical performance and craftsmanship have been met in an assortment of outer and active wear for men and women, most of which you don't have to be a climber to appreciate.

The collection is designed to work together, from base and insulating layers to soft- and hard-shell jackets and pants. There are also First Ascent accessories, including socks, hats and gloves. Although some Eddie Bauer stores have special First Ascent departments, the Pittsburgh store at the Mall at Robinson isn't one of them. But you can buy the collection online through firstascent.com.
