Muscle Hill overpowered the competition and ran away with harness racing's Horse of the Year honors. A 12-0 record last year earned the 3-year-old trotter 164 of 173 votes from the U.S. Harness Writers Association, easily defeating fellow-trotter Lucky Jim and pacer Well Said for the sport's top award.
Well Said was voted Pacer of the Year and Muscle Hill also earned Trotter of the Year honors in voting released Sunday.
In winning the Hambletonian, Muscle Hill equaled the all-age world record of 1:50.1 for trotting on a mile track. He was trained by Greg Peck and driven in all but one start by Brian Sears. Peck was chosen Trainer of the Year and Sears was Driver of the Year.
Defending champions Bob and Mike Bryan moved into second place on the Open Era doubles titles list, winning their 58th career title at the Delray Beach International championships in Florida. The Bryans beat Philipp Marx of Germany and Igor Zelenay of Slovakia, 6-3, 7-6 (3), to snap a tie with Peter Fleming and John McEnroe, and Bob Hewitt and Frew McMillan. The Bryans are four titles away from surpassing the record of 61 held by Australians Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde.
Novak Djokovic successfully defended his Dubai Championships title, beating Mikhail Youzhny of Russia, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, in a rain-delayed final. Leading 7-5, 2-0 before rain suspended play Saturday, the second-seeded Serb won his 17th career title in a match lasting 3 hours, 21 minutes at the Aviation Club in United Arab Emirates.
Ernests Gulbis became the first Latvian to win an ATP Tour title when he upset second-seeded Ivo Karlovic of Croatia, 6-2, 6-3, at the Delray Beach International.
J.C. Romero was throwing off of a mound for the first time since undergoing elbow surgery in October, and Brad Lidge was tossing his slider for the first time as two of the Philadelphia Phillies' top relievers try to get themselves ready by opening day. Romero was delivering 23 pitches -- all fastballs -- Sunday while Lidge, who is recovering from surgeries on his elbow and his knee, was hurling 35 of his own in just his third bullpen session of the spring.
South Korean right-hander Chan Ho Park took part in his first workout with the New York Yankees. Park, 36, agreed to terms last week on a $1.2 million, one-year deal with $300,000 in incentives.
Two-time Olympic silver medalist hurdler Terrence Trammell is used to having success at the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships. So facing a loaded field Sunday in the 60-meter hurdles in Albuquerque, N.M., wasn't an intimidating factor. Trammell took the victory with a time of 7.41 seconds, earning his fifth U.S. indoor title.
Wayne Rooney scored his 28th goal of the club season as Manchester United successfully defended the English League Cup with a 2-1 victory against Aston Villa in Wembley, England. It was the first meeting of U.S.-owned clubs in an English final.
