Notebook: Venison donation program receives humanitarian award
Sunday, February 28, 2010

Hunters Sharing the Harvest, the Pennsylvania program that coordinates the processing and distribution of hunter-donated venison to soup kitchens and food pantries, has received the 2010 Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show Humanitarian Award.

Founded in 1991, the program has become a model for wild game food distribution in other states. An average deer provides enough highly-nutritious, low-cholesterol meat for 200 meals. Hunters Sharing the Harvest has developed partnerships with deer processors, charitable provider organizations in cities and rural communities, the Pennsylvania Game Commission, hunters and municipal herd reduction groups to get venison to people who need it.

The Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show Humanitarian Award is presented each year to an individual or organization who uses knowledge of the outdoors and outdoor sports to improve and support their community.
