WPIAL Diving Championships: Jones, Taccone golden
Saturday, February 27, 2010

Snowy conditions outside might make summer seem like it's light years away, but two local divers got a head start by putting together shining performances in the pool.

Jonathan Jones and Caroline Taccone won gold medals Friday at the WPIAL Class AA diving championships at South Park.

Jones, a Uniontown junior, was the boys' winner with a score of 395.80 after finishing fourth last season.

Taccone, an Oakland Catholic senior, took top honors among the girls' with a score of 367.40.

On the boys' side, Jones edged Lucas Kachurck of Elizabeth Forward, who scored 381.70. South Fayette's Richard Klimek placed third with 292.30.

Taccone's closest competitor was Tabitha Bemis of Quaker Valley, who scored 352.05.

The top seven finishers in the boys' and girls' fields qualified for the PIAA championships March 17-18 at Bucknell University.
