The Dribbler has not spent much time studying his WPIAL playoff brackets this week because he has been glued to the TV watching the Winter Olympics.
And, frankly, he hasn't gotten much sleep, either. The Dribbler is a fan of the, well, alternative Olympic events. Unlike figure skating and speed skating, The Dribbler's favorite events are not broadcast until the wee hours of the morning when only a few folks are watching.
You might not be familiar with some of these sports. They are inspired by the bravest athletes of winter: those who simply want to survive.
Here's a list of some favorites:
Brake Pumping -- A car that is at least 10 years old is placed on a sheet of ice. After accelerating to 35 MPH, the driver hits the brakes. The car that stops in the shortest distance, wins.
Dodging -- Pedestrians walk a 5-kilometer course in downtown Vancouver. Anybody who makes it to the finish line without getting dusted by falling ice from skyscrapers gets a gold medal. Nobody has won yet.
Urban Slalom -- Again in a car, athletes drive through a course and must weave around potholes. Also a Summer Olympic event, though only available at Daytona International Speedway. Fastest time wins.
Triathlon -- Really a spring-time event, this sport is only available in cities near a body of water and must take place after a heavy rain or a large thaw. After driving to a day of work, athletes must park near water, walk to work, swim back to their car and escape without stalling.
Really riveting TV.
The Dribbler's record is still far from gold-medal material. He was 33-19 last week (63.5 percent) and is 117-59 overall (66.5 percent).
Here are The Dribbler's views on this week's top games:
North Allegheny vs. Peters Township, 1:30 p.m. Saturday, at Baldwin -- The Indians made The Dribbler look awfully smart last week with their upset win against Butler. Another successful upset pick could make The Dribbler look like a certified genius. But he is willing to settle for "not stupid." Winner: North Allegheny.
Gateway vs. Kiski Area, 1:30 p.m. Saturday, at Plum -- The Gators have struggled this year when playing tough defensive teams, and Kiski Area is one of the best in the WPIAL Class AAAA in scoring defense. Gateway has size and athletic advantages, but it might not be enough against the defensive-minded Cavaliers. Winner: Kiski Area.
TODAY -- Chartiers Valley over Trinity; Highlands over West Allegheny; Hampton over Montour; West Mifflin over Belle Vernon; Sewickley Academy over Neshannock; Clairton over Cornell; Lincoln Park over OLSH; Serra Catholic over Vincentian.
SATURDAY -- Mt. Lebanon over McKeesport; Upper St. Clair over Latrobe.
Butler vs. Bethel Park, 6:30 p.m. today, North Hills -- No Class AAAA team had a stronger start to the season than the Black Hawks. But Bethel Park struggled down the stretch. Still, when the Black Hawks are on their game, they've shown they are an elite Class AAAA team. The Dribbler expects Bethel Park to bring its best in the playoffs. Winner: Bethel Park.
TODAY -- Baldwin over Kiski Area; Mt. Lebanon over Fox Chapel; Shaler over Peters Township; Avonworth over Bishop Canevin; Seton-LaSalle over Sto-Rox; Jeannette over South Fayette; Greensburg Central Catholic over Beaver.
