Roger Federer withdrew Sunday from the Dubai Championships in United Arab Emirates because of a lung infection.
Organizers said that the top-ranked Swiss star picked up the infection last week and will miss the $2 million event, which starts today, for the second consecutive year.
A four-time winner in Dubai, Federer will rest for two weeks and is expected to return March 11 at Indian Wells, Calif.
Jan Hernych of the Czech Republic replaces him in the main draw.
Andy Roddick, the 2008 champion, withdrew Saturday from the tournament on Saturday.
Defending champion Novak Djokovic, Australian Open runner-up Andy Murray, Nikolay Davydenko, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga and Marin Cilic are the top-10 ranked players in the field at the hard-court event.
Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain defeated compatriot David Ferrer in the final of the Copa Telmex played on outdoor clay at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club in Argentina. Second-seeded Ferrero beat the top-seeded Ferrer, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, in two hours and 32 minutes, saving seven of 11 break points he faced along the way.
Sam Querrey rallied in the second tiebreaker and took advantage of a faltering John Isner in the third set, winning the Morgan Keegan Championships, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (5), 6-3, in Memphis, Tenn. Isner overpowered his doubles partner and future Davis Cup teammate in the first set, but faltered after taking a 5-2 lead in the second-set tiebreaker. Two points from defeat, Querrey fought back for his third career title and first this season.
Unseeded Michael Llodra won his fourth career title when he beat eighth-seeded Julien Benneteau, 6-3, 6-4 in an all-French final at the Open 13 in Marseille, France. Llodra was playing in his eighth final and took his first title since beating Robin Soderling at Rotterdam two years ago.
Hometown favorite Mariana Duque Marino beat fifth-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany, 6-4 6-3, to win the Copa Colsanitas clay-court tournament in Bogota, Colombia, for her first WTA title.
Pitt (2-1) suffered its first loss of the season with a 9-8 loss at Wofford, S.C. The Panthers scored four runs in the seventh off of three hits including a two-run double from Joe Leonard. Wofford responded with a six-run effort in the bottom of the seventh to take an 8-6 lead.
Baseball is about to have a permanent home in Rome. Mayor Gianni Alemanno announced plans to donate a parcel of land for a new, baseball-specific stadium that can play host to international events. It will be built in Tor Vergata, an area south of the city where there's a campus for the University of Rome.
The union for Major League Soccer players is accusing management of failing to bargain seriously and wouldn't say whether it would play under the terms of its expired labor contract. A day after MLS president Mark Abbott went public with the league's offer to start the season next month without a new deal, the union issued a statement that left open the possibility of the league's first strike.
The Notre Dame men won their fourth Big East Conference indoor track and field title, while the Villanova women captured their first championship since 2000 and 12th overall. Notre Dame finished with 146 1/2 points at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory in New York, followed by Georgetown, Louisville, Villanova and Connecticut. Pitt was 10th.
On the women's side, Villanova rallied from seventh after the first day to finish with 107 points. Connecticut was second with 84, followed by Georgetown and West Virginia. Pitt was 12th.
