Where to go ... Moraine State Park
Sunday, February 21, 2010

What to do: A popular picnicking and fishing destination during the warm months, 16,725-acre Moraine State Park has lots to do when the weather's cold. Once a coal mining and oil- and gas-drilling site, the park is open year-round with much of the action centered around 3,225-acre Lake Arthur. Nearly 30 miles of trails are open to hiking, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing -- Pleasant Valley and Sunken Garden trails have been connected and improved for skiers. Eleven modern cabins are available for rent, and there's a great sledding hill at the Pleasant View Picnic Area on the South Shore. Ice boating is legal with a launching permit, an ice skating area is maintained on the South Shore and there's a lot of fishing through the ice. Beginning this week, three bridges will be closed on West Park Road for structural repairs and deck replacement on the North Shore. Detours will be marked.
