PG South/West: Char Valley girls adapt, wins
Thursday, February 11, 2010

There has been change all around the Chartiers Valley High School girls' basketball team.

Injuries have forced the hand of coach Spencer Stefko and his team has had to deal with changing roles, changing minutes and changing lineups.

There have also been constants. Like winning and Paige Aleski's scoring and the kind of stability brought to a team with five seniors.

The Colts (15-4, 10-0) turned around a season that started at 1-4 to play as consistent as any team in the WPIAL, winning 14 consecutive games, a stretch that started Dec. 19 in Orlando, Fla. at the KSA Disney Classic and spanned 10 critical Section 4-AAA wins and major non-section road wins at Class AAAA Seneca Valley and Class AAA contender Hampton.

"We are hitting a little bit of a stride," Stefko said. "We had some bumps in the road but every team has that. Our kids have managed pretty well and that is because of the resiliency of the kids."

Resiliency is a trait that was not optional for this team this year. Stefko's ideal starting lineup would feature both junior guard Lexy Herron and senior guard Erica Restich, but because of injuries those two have only played together for seven games.

Restich sustained torn tendons in her right foot during a fall league game at North Allegheny. She opted against surgery that could have ended her senior season and she made an earlier-than-expected comeback in time for the eighth game of the season, a home game against South Park.

Eight games later in a rematch against South Park, Herron sustained a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus in her left knee.

Thus, she is out for the season. She is looking forward to her senior year but in the meantime she has been the team's biggest fan and an "assistant coach" on the bench.

"The neat thing with that kid is she is so smart and understands the game," Stefko said. "She sees things most teenagers done recognize. She is doing a great job."

Restich has since returned and has led her team in minutes the past eight games.

"She is making a lot of decisions for us with the ball almost like a point guard/forward," Stefko said.

"The one consistent through this all has been Paige Aleski. She has been healthy and doing what a senior does."

Seniors Kayla Dames, Alyssa Mazzarini and Rebecca Braithwaite have also played key roles. Each sees starting time along with freshman Alex Coyne, a 5-foot-1 guard.

"[Coyne] is this little spitfire of a kid," Stefko said. "She has done a great job of helping out with Lexy being out. Alex is starting as a freshman and with our five seniors we really have six players who can start."

Five different players have led or tied for the lead in scoring for the Colts, including Aleski who has done it in 11 games, Restich four times and Herron who did it six times before being injured.

"Erica has come up big in games when people have been injured or out," Stefko said.

"She has developed a great feel when to take over a game. You get the feeling watching her play that she could score 20 or 30, but she has fallen in love with distributing.

"She is one of the better shooters in the area and I tell her 'You need to get your shots.'"

Aleski leads the team with 12.2 points per game, Herron was averaging 11.7 points before her injury and Restich is scoring 11.6 points per game.

Chartiers Valley's section game at Steel Valley scheduled for Monday was postponed. The Colts are scheduled to play section rival West Allegheny Friday at 6 p.m. at home.

Chartiers Valley High School's Alyssa Mazzarini, left, looks to make a pass while being guarded by South Park's Lauren Lindsay in a Section 4-AAA game last month.
