Carnegie Mellon University will further curb outdoor smoking on its campus starting Jan. 1 but has opted against a campuswide ban in 2010 that was discussed last year.
Existing policy across the 10,000-student university prohibits smoking indoors, including residence halls, and within 20 feet of building entrances and air intake systems, or wherever specifically posted. The new policy limits smoking to designated areas that will be developed in the coming weeks.
Offenders will be warned during the first three months and afterward will be subject to a $25 fine, spokesman Ken Walters said yesterday.
