The teenager accused in an assault last weekend on a Shuman Juvenile Detention Center staff member was himself assaulted Wednesday, suffering a broken nose in a fight with another teen. He was in the Shuman gym playing basketball at the time.
State Department of Public Welfare officials were at Shuman yesterday to interview staff and review security tapes about the incident. DPW spokesman Stacey Witalec said the teen began kicking and trying to assault staff while being escorted back to his unit, so Shuman staff physically restrained him for 12 seconds. She said DPW is still reviewing the incident.
Last Saturday, the 15-year-old allegedly punched a female staff member, giving her a black eye. At the time, the staff member was supervising nine teens by herself, three more than state regulations allow.
