Police douse kitchen blaze, rescue residents in McKees Rocks
Friday, September 05, 2008

McKees Rocks police early yesterday rescued four people from the roof of a burning kitchen, and an officer put out the fire before firefighters arrived.

No injuries were reported.

The fire prompted a man and three women to scramble to the first-floor roof of the two-story house at 320 Broadway Ave. Three police officers who responded after the call at 2:05 a.m. saw them and took immediate action.

Inside the house, Officer David Sinergy saw flames on the stove and the wall of the kitchen. He retrieved a fire extinguisher from his cruiser while Capt. William Gramz and Officer Rick Deliman used a neighbor's ladder to help the stranded people climb to safety.

Officer Sinergy put the fire out as firefighters arrived. Police Chief Robert Cifrulak praised his officers' quick action.

"In minutes it would've been a totally involved fire," Chief Cifrulak said.

The Red Cross in Pittsburgh assisted four adults and one child with food and shelter and provided clothing for an adult.
