Pirates blow five run lead, lose 8-6 to Reds
Thursday, September 04, 2008

CINCINNATI -- Tom Gorzelanny, given a 5-0 lead in the second inning, didn't make it out of the fourth inning today and the Pirate bullpen was of little assistance in what became an 8-6 loss to Cincinnati.

It was Pirates' 80th loss, putting them two away from tying the professional sports record of 16 consecutive losing seasons.

Gorzelanny had his second poor start in three appearances since ending his exile to Indianapolis. He labored through 3 2/3 innings, yielding seven hits, two walks and three runs. In 20 starts for the Pirates this season, the left-hander has pitched five innings or less six times.

After Nate McLouth put the Pirates ahead, 6-5, with a leadoff home run in the eighth, the Reds scored three runs in the bottom of the inning. Craig Hansen was charged with all three runs. He allowed a hit and two walks and got only one out. In 10 1/3 innings for the Pirates since his acquisition from Boston, the right-hander has walked 14.
