Rebounding from a disappointing showing in the Olympics, sprinter Lauryn Williams from Rochester, Pa., was named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after winning two events in the rain Sunday at the Aviva British Grand Prix in Gateshead, England. Lorena Ochoa of Mexico says a new LPGA Tour policy requiring players to be effective in English starting in 2009 is a "little drastic." Ochoa, the No. 1 player in women's golf, says golfers are better judged by their performance. She was asked at a charity event in her hometown of Guadalajara yesterday if she thought the new policy discriminated against international players. "That is a a very strong word. I wouldn't want to use it," said Ochoa, who speaks English.

The Toronto Maple Leafs traded veteran defenseman Bryan McCabe and a fourth-round draft pick to the Florida Panthers for defenseman Mike Van Ryn. McCabe waived his no-trade clause to permit the trade. McCabe's annual salary-cap hit for the next three seasons will be $5.75 million, even though the Panthers will only have to pay him $4.15 million per season on the front-heavy deal. The Maple Leafs are on the hook for a $2 million bonus that was due Monday. Van Ryn has two years left on his contract and will earn $3.35 million each season. His cap hit is only $2.9 million, allowing Toronto to free $11.45 million over the next three years.
