Shady Side Academy has built a tradition as one of the strongest soccer programs in the WPIAL over the past several seasons, but yesterday, in its Class A Section 2 opener, the No. 4-ranked Indians were stunned by upstart Springdale, 1-0.

Austin Leathers scored the lone goal with 21 minutes remaining in the second half for Springdale (3-0, 1-0).

Springdale goalkeeper Brian Simcic made sure the lead stood up as he posted his second shutout of the young season. Springdale has not been scored on in its three games thus far.

Shady Side Academy fell to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in section.

• Garrett Laird and Max Witten netted two goals each as No. 9-ranked Franklin Regional (1-0, 1-0) rolled to a 7-1 Section 3 win against Woodland Hills (0-2, 0-1).

• No. 10 Fox Chapel (2-0, 1-0) opened Section 3 play by blanking Plum (1-2, 0-1), 3-0.

• No. 2 Mt. Lebanon (3-0, 1-0) scored 11 goals as it opened Section 4 play by blanking Albert Gallatin (1-2, 0-1), 11-0. Conor Wohlfarth led the onslaught with three goals. Goalkeepers Evan Slater and Sam Zytka combined for the shutout.

• Baldwin (0-2-1, 0-0-1) surprised Laurel Highlands (2-0-1, 0-0-1), battling the Mustangs to a 1-1 tie in their Section 4 opener.

• Steve Tremtus netted both goals for Pine-Richland (1-0) in its 2-0 non-section win against Moon (0-2).

• No. 5 Knoch (1-0) slipped past Class AAA Kiski Area (0-3), 3-2, in a non-section match. Chris Ferlock scored twice for Knoch.

• Matt Booska scored three goals to lead Hopewell (2-0, 1-0) to a 6-0 Section 4 win against Riverside (1-1, 0-1).

• No. 1 Mars (2-0, 1-0) opened its Section 2 campaign with an easy, 5-1 win against Hampton (1-1, 0-1). Tim Frigot tallied twice for the Planets, and Ryan McKenzie added a goal and two assists.

• Sam Sestito and Ryan Conley had three goals each as Beaver (2-0, 1-0) rolled to a 7-2 win against Mohawk (0-2, 0-1) in a Section 4 opener.

• No. 8 Thomas Jefferson (4-0, 1-0) opened its Section 3 slate with a 3-1 win against Belle Vernon (2-1-1, 0-1). Tyler Danzey paced the Jaguars' attack with a goal and an assist.

• Luke Mesing and Josh Cantella each netted a hat trick for Freedom (1-0, 1-0) in its 6-0 Section 5 win against New Brighton (0-3, 0-1).

• Casey Courneen had four goals and an assist as No. 5 Quaker Valley (1-2, 1-0) coasted to a 9-1 Section 5 win against Neshannock (1-1, 0-1) in a Section 5 opener.

• Monessen's Jared Dobsch scored five goals as the Greyhounds (2-1, 1-0) began Section 4 play with a 7-3 victory against Brentwood (0-1, 0-1).

• David DelGreco led a potent No. 2 Seton-LaSalle (2-0, 1-0) offense with three goals in its 11-3 Section 3 win against Avonworth (0-2, 0-1). Three other Rebels had two goals each in the contest.

• Sophomore Brittany Core scored four goals to lead Geibel (1-2) to a 5-4 non-section win against Beth-Center (1-2).

• Senior E.J. McFarland fired a 4-under par 32 at Lindenwood Golf Club to lead Upper St. Clair to a 184-191 win against Canon-McMillan.

• Brandon Pompeani, Andrew Edwards, and Josh Hribar all carded even-par 36s at Shadow Lakes for Hopewell in its 182-213 win against Blackhawk.

• Tyler Bergman carded a 1-under-par 34 for North Hills in its 188-208 win against Pine-Richland at Highland Country Club.

• Sewickley Academy's Ian Banger shot a 2-under-par 34 at Wildwood Golf Club in its 193-209 Section 3 win against Vincentian.

• George Schneider shot an even-par 34 for Seton-LaSalle in its 192-235 Section 7 win against East Allegheny.
