Where to go: Elk spotting
Winslow Hill, Benezette
Sunday, August 31, 2008

What to do: Pennsylvania elk are truly spectacular. While white-tailed deer stand 3 feet at the shoulder and weigh about 150 pounds, their larger cousins stand twice as tall and can top 800 pounds. Seeing them in the wild is a treat for kids and adults. Benezette, north of DuBois, is within a 227-square-mile range where about 800 free-range elk roam in Elk, Cameron, Clearfield, Centre and Potter counties. The wild elk may be spotted at dawn and dusk anywhere within their range, but two viewing sites with off-road parking on Winslow Hill at Benezette offer some of the best viewing opportunities -- one site includes an elk information center. From Benezette, north on Winslow Hill Road 3.6 miles.
