Local Cars: Victory at 'the Ditch' comes as a surprise
Friday, August 22, 2008

Brian Ellenberger winning a sprint car race wasn't surprising; winning it at a place he had never seen was.

The Butler native finally picked up a win Saturday with the O'Reilly All Stars in, of all places, West Memphis, Ark.

Ellenberger, fifth in All Star points, knew he would win a race somewhere, but he never thought it would be at Riverside International Raceway, nicknamed, "the Ditch."

When asked if he thought his first All Star win would come at the Ditch, Ellenberger laughed. "No, nope, it wasn't. There were 10 other tracks where I thought I'd get my first win, but not there."

He started on the inside of the first row alongside Tim Shaffer of Aliquippa. Shaffer raced at Riverside many times with the World of Outlaws, while this was Ellenberger's first visit to the West Memphis track.

"It was one of those nights where everything went well," Ellenberger said. "It was a slick track and to start on the pole was huge. It was the luck of the draw to get the pole and to hold off Shaffer going into turn one."

Ellenberger said it was about time he finally picked up his first win with the All Stars.

"You know, we've been close so many times ... ," Ellenberger said. "It feels great; I couldn't be any more excited to wear the crown, King of the Ditch."
