PIAA Softball Playoffs: Bryson leads Latrobe to 1-0 win
Her 25 Ks help Wildcats into Class AAAA title game; Vincentian also advances

Postseason games continue to mean nothing to Latrobe's Alexa Bryson.

Bryson, a senior right-handed pitcher, continued her masterful postseason performance yesterday in a PIAA Class AAAA semifinal, shutting out Central York, 1-0, in 13 innings at Penn State Altoona. Latrobe (22-2) scored the winning run in the bottom of the 13th on an error.

Bryson has not allowed a run in the postseason (WPIAL and PIAA playoffs). Six games. Fifty-one innings. Nothing.

Against Central York (19-6), Bryson struck out 25 and allowed just five hits. She walked only one.

"I didn't think it would ever end," Bryson said. "I felt tired in the fifth inning, but better in the 13th."

Latrobe coach Bob Kovalcin said, "I told everyone she's the best pitcher in the state. But Central York's pitcher pitched a heck of a game, too."

Central York's Lauren Walker, a freshman, allowed only four hits and struck out 11. She walked two.

In the bottom of the 13th, Latrobe's Meghan Kozusko singled. Rachel Eaglehouse bunted and reached on an error. Amanda Malnofsky bunted and the throw to first was wild, allowing Kozusko to score.

"I scouted [Central York] and knew they had a good defensive team and solid pitching," Kovalcin said. "I expected the game to be close and tight."

Bryson worked out of a big jam in the 11th inning as Central York loaded the bases with one out. But Bryson got a popout to third baseman Eaglehouse, who then threw to second base for a double play.

"I felt threatened in the 11th," Bryson said. "I've been in worse situations before, but this was a high-level game."

The win lifted Bryson's record to 20-2 on the season and she now has 306 strikeouts.

Latrobe will play in the championship game Friday at Shippensburg University against Hatboro-Horsham, which defeated Owen J. Roberts, 12-3, in another semifinal.

Class AAA

Susquehannock 2, Belle Vernon 0: Megan Sheaf pitched a one-hitter and struck out 14 to lead Susquehannock (24-2) to the semifinal win at Penn State Altoona. Belle Vernon, the WPIAL runner-up, finished 17-9.

Susquehannock scored its only runs in the sixth inning against Belle Vernon pitcher Ashley Nichols. Carley Nickles and Chelsea Shockey had back-to-back run-scoring singles.

Susquehannock made two errors in the seventh, allowing Belle Vernon to get runners to second and third in the final inning. But the Leopards didn't score.

Class A

Vincentian 7, Bishop Guilfoyle 2: It was the Melvins and Leasure Show as WPIAL champ Vincentian (23-2) breezed to the win at IUP.

Trish Melvin pitched a two-hitter, struck out eight and also had an RBI. Her sister, catcher Nina, had a double and an RBI. Chelsea Leasure had a two-run double and four RBIs.

The score was tied, 2-2, after the first inning.
