The Homewood Cemetery Historical Fund is offering two different walking tours today.
The cemetery was established in 1878 on U.S. Senator William Wilkins’ 650-acre estate he named Homewood. It is filled with the histories of generations of distinguished men and women who made considerable contributions to the history of Pittsburgh and America.
The first tour is "Taking It With You," which focuses on Section 14 of The Homewood Cemetery, final resting place for such well known Pittsburghers as the Heinz family, the Benedums and several notable Mellons. The second tour, "Angels & Obelisks," purposefully moves the focus from the wealthy to the everyday people. Concentrating on lesser known Pittsburghers allows the tour to walk through several different sections of the cemetery and to focus more on monuments and the design of the cemetery grounds.
Reservations are required for both tours and can be made at (412) 421-1822. The fee is $5 a person with proceeds going to The Homewood Cemetery Historical Fund.
