wats:ON? Festival 2010: Adventures In Virtuality

This exciting festival will examine states of virtuality by bringing together artists and designers who work in both analog and digital modes. As an alternative to lectures, "Wats:On" invites both emerging and recognized artists to demonstrate and install their work as well as present workshops and discussions throughout the university's College Of Fine Arts.

Sponsored by The Jill Watson Family Foundation, the festival offers the campus community and general public a chance to engage with leading interdisciplinary artists. The festival honors Jill Watson's commitment to an interdisciplinary philosophy as an artist and celebrates her accomplishments and reputation as an architect.

Jill Watson was a Carnegie Mellon University alumna, adjunct faculty member in the School Of Architecture and acclaimed Pittsburgh architect who died in the TWA Flight 800 plane crash on July 17, 1996. For more information, call 9412) 268-2409.

Green Bird Scavenger Hunt

Visitors will be given a scavenger hunt sheet at the admissions desk to help them search and keep track of the birds that they find. Children under 12 who participate receive a takeaway treat.

Conserving Our Paper Heritage

Please join paper conservator Janet English Heller as she describes the painstaking process of assessing and repairing the delicate documents in the Joy & R. David Brocklebank Fraktur Collection.

Fraktur is the German word that refers to a stylized, highly decorative watercolor or watercolor-and-ink painting often bearing elaborate calligraphy and standardized motifs. In 2008, The Westmoreland acquired the Joy & R. David Brocklebank Fraktur Collection of over 250 German folk-art documents consist mainly of birth and baptismal records but also include house blessings, writing examples and narratives. These works contain the genealogical record of the early immigrants to our region.

Margaret Morrison Distinguished Lecture In Women's History

Elsa Barkley Brown, a professor of history and women's studies at the University Of Maryland, offers a lecture titled "Clothes, Class & Travel: Reuniting The Domestic Tradition."

Elsa Barkley Brown was won numerous awards for her African-American and American research. She has been published in various periodicals including Feminist Studies and History Workshop.
